Three cheers for Bavaria!

Berchtesgaden is celebrating 200 years of belonging to the most southerly Federal State in Germany. The following are the highlights of the summer of celebrations at the InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort on the Obersalzberg.

Berchtesgaden has been many things in its time: In the 12th century, it was the capital of a tiny spiritual Augustine state, while in the 16th century it was a principality. Following Secularisation in 1803, Berchtesgaden took a ride on a bit of an international law roller-coaster. First, it became part of the Electorate of Salzburg, only to be taken over by the Austrian Emperor after just two years. Another four years later, Napoleon seized Berchtesgaden but only held onto it for a year. Finally, in 1810, Berchtesgaden found peace: it was annexed to the kingdom of Bavaria, where it remains to this day (although Bavaria is officially a Federal State these days, it’s still a bit of a kingdom in the hearts of many Bavarians). The InterContinental Berchtesgaden Resort is putting on a string of cultural events throughout the summer to mark the 200-year anniversary of Berchtesgaden.
